Tom Marais is an internationally recognised South African cinematographer.
After seventeen years in the industry, Tom still maintains his love affair with visual storytelling.
He loves a challenge and enjoys the process of collaborating with creative individuals on every project. Tom prides himself on being flexible and part of his creative process is finding the right look and feel for each distinctive narrative, while working closely with his team, each step of the way.
In 2016, he was internationally awarded for his work on Free State when he received the M. Carroll Raven Award for Cinematography at the Garden State Film Festival in NJ, USA.
This great year in Tom’s life was the culmination of building on the momentum of the previous years. Among receiving numerous local filmmaking awards, Tom was also honoured by being nominated as a board member of the prestigious South African Society of Cinematographers, also known as the SASC.
